Sherry (Chiayi) Lee Email [email protected] Bio/Description I earned a combined BA/MA in Classics from Yale in 2018, where I wrote a senior thesis on Greek literary history in Dioscorides’ epigrams, and I arrived at Princeton in the fall of the same year. I am the recipient of a Procter Honorific Fellowship for the 2023-2024 academic year.My research examines authorship practices and constructions of authorial identity in ancient Greek literature, and especially in Hellenistic poetry. I also work on models of readership and reception, the representation of female voices, the materiality of text, and applications of modern pedagogy for classical studies. I have published on the ritual context of Nossis’ epigrams for votives dedicated by hetairai, as well as on consolation and longevity in Posidippus’ epitymbia. My dissertation, Naming the Poet: Authorship in Hellenistic Epigram and Scholarship, offers the first synoptic study of authorship in the Hellenistic period, shedding light on crucial innovations in the concept of authorship that emerge in epigram and ancient scholarship. Tracing the significance of authorial naming in both modes, I demonstrate how epigram and scholarship develop opposing discourses of authorship. For scholars at the Mouseion of Alexandria, authenticity and attribution become tools for restricting authorial speech. But epigram poets, as I show, develop unruly, generative approaches to authorship, transforming attributions into opportunities for play and fostering a distinct openness to pseudepigraphy.I also research and advocate for inclusive teaching practices, especially in ancient language pedagogy. Currently, I am conducting research on and developing tiered texts for use in teaching Latin and Greek literature. For the last two summers, I have piloted an immersive, study-abroad ancient Greek summer course at the Princeton Athens Center, thanks to the generous support of Princeton Hellenic Studies (profiled here). In addition to teaching at Princeton, I have spent several summers teaching intensive ancient Greek at Fu Jen University in my native country, Taiwan.
