This course provides an in-depth introduction to Roman drama. We will read one play each by Plautus (Pseudolus), Terence (Adelphoe), and Seneca (Phaedra), providing a survey of three centuries of Roman comedy and tragedy. We will cover topics including the historical contexts in which these plays were produced; issues of genre and literary history, including Greek models; the role of enslaved characters and women; and questions of performance.
